Banksy Investigation: Was The Sotheby’s Shredding Real Or Did We All Get Banksy-ed?

We’ve all seen and heard the news by now.

The British street artist Banksy pulled off one of his most spectacular pranks on Friday 5 October when one of his trademark paintings appeared to self-destruct at Sotheby’s in London after selling for $1.4 million at auction.

Because Banksy is the art community’s biggest troll, his dramatic choice to automatically shred one of his most famous works was not particularly surprising.

But who was in on it? Sotheby’s have adamantly claimed no involvement. “It appears we just got Banksy-ed,” said Alex Branczik, Senior Director and Head of Contemporary Art, Europe London.
